Ode to Morphine

How can such clear liquid
cloud thoughts  with ease?
A nurse injects another dose
into my cannula tube.
The intravenous elixir meanders
along my bloodstream,
cascades down my veins,
washes over my body —
drowning all pain.

I float above the bed,
swaddled in a cool breeze.

The nurses excavate
my skeletal pin sites,
pick out the infection,
while my mind percolates
through my pores.
